Clinically reviewed by Daniel Lewis, MD, Board Certified Addiction Medicine

Mental health struggles don’t always require residential care—but they do require real treatment. If you’re dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, or other mental health conditions, our outpatient programs offer the intensive support you need while allowing you to stay connected to your daily life.

At Yellow Wood Recovery, we specialize in treating mental health conditions that often occur alongside substance use disorders. But you don’t need to have a substance use issue to benefit from our mental health programs. We treat the whole person—because lasting wellness requires addressing everything that’s affecting your life.

Our Outpatient Programs

We offer three levels of outpatient care, each designed to provide the right intensity of treatment based on where you are in your recovery journey.

ProgramHours/WeekBest For
Partial Hospitalization (PHP)20–30 hoursStepping down from residential or needing intensive daily support
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)9–19 hoursBalancing treatment with work, school, or family responsibilities
Outpatient1–8 hoursOngoing support and maintenance after completing higher levels of care

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our Partial Hospitalization Program provides the highest level of outpatient care—structured, intensive treatment during the day while you return home in the evenings. PHP offers hospital-level support without requiring an overnight stay.

Who Is PHP For?

PHP may be right for you if:

  • You’re stepping down from residential or inpatient treatment and need continued intensive support
  • Your symptoms are too severe for weekly therapy but you don’t require 24/7 supervision
  • You’ve recently experienced a mental health crisis and need stabilization
  • You have a safe, supportive home environment to return to each evening
  • You need medication management alongside intensive therapy
What to Expect in PHP
  • Schedule: 5–6 days per week, 5–6 hours per day
  • Individual Therapy: Weekly one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist
  • Group Therapy: Multiple daily groups addressing coping skills, emotional regulation, trauma processing, and life skills
  • Psychiatric Services: Regular appointments with our psychiatrists for medication evaluation and management
  • Case Management: Coordination of care, discharge planning, and connection to community resources
  • Typical Duration: 2–4 weeks, based on clinical progress

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our Intensive Outpatient Program provides structured treatment that fits around your life. IOP offers significant therapeutic support while allowing you to maintain work, school, or family responsibilities.

Who Is IOP For?

IOP may be right for you if:

  • You’re stepping down from PHP or residential treatment
  • You need more support than weekly therapy but can’t commit to full-day programming
  • You’re managing mental health symptoms while working or attending school
  • You have stable housing and don’t require daily medical monitoring
  • You’re motivated to apply what you learn in treatment to your daily life
What to Expect in IOP
  • Schedule: 3–5 days per week, 3 hours per day (morning or evening options available)
  • Individual Therapy: Weekly sessions with your assigned therapist
  • Group Therapy: Daily process groups and skill-building sessions
  • Psychiatric Services: Medication management as needed
  • Family Involvement: Optional family sessions to support your recovery at home
  • Typical Duration: 4–8 weeks, with flexibility based on progress

Outpatient Services

Our standard outpatient services provide ongoing support for individuals who have completed higher levels of care or who need consistent, lower-intensity treatment to maintain their mental health.

Who Is Outpatient For?

Outpatient may be right for you if:

  • You’ve completed PHP or IOP and need continued support
  • Your symptoms are manageable, but you benefit from regular therapeutic check-ins
  • You need ongoing medication management
  • You want to maintain progress and prevent relapse
What to Expect in Outpatient
  • Schedule: 1–2 sessions per week
  • Individual Therapy: Ongoing one-on-one sessions focused on maintaining progress
  • Group Therapy: Optional support groups and alumni programming
  • Psychiatric Services: Continued medication management
  • Duration: Ongoing, based on your needs and goals

Frequently Asked Questions

No referral is required. You can call us directly to schedule an assessment. If you have a therapist, psychiatrist, or primary care doctor who is referring you, we’re happy to coordinate with them.

This is our specialty. Co-occurring disorders, when mental health conditions and substance use occur together, require integrated treatment that addresses both issues simultaneously. Our team is trained to treat both, and we won’t ask you to address one before the other.

No. Medication is one tool among many, and it’s always your choice. Our psychiatrists will discuss whether medication might be helpful for your situation, explain the options, and respect your decision. Many people benefit from therapy alone; others find that medication helps them engage more fully in treatment.

We’ll help you figure that out. When you call, our admissions team will ask questions about your symptoms, daily functioning, support system, and treatment history. Based on this information, and a clinical assessment, we’ll recommend the level of care that gives you the best chance at meaningful recovery.

Most insurance plans cover mental health outpatient treatment. We verify your benefits before you start so there are no surprises. We accept most major PPO plans and work with some HMO plans. Call us or use our online insurance verification form to find out what’s covered.

Yes, this is one of the main benefits of outpatient treatment. PHP requires a significant time commitment during the day, but many people in IOP maintain their jobs by attending morning or evening sessions. Standard outpatient is designed to fit easily around work and other responsibilities.
